Tire Pressure and Cold Weather

Save Your Tire Pressure from the Cold Weather

It already happened for the first time this season. Just last week, I turned on the car and BOOM! On went the warning light indicating low tire pressure. Seems like as soon as the air temperature falls below freezing, that warning light pops up and doesn't go away until the cold weather does.

Follow these steps to save your tire pressure from the elements:

  • Check tire pressure before driving around; the colder the tire, the more accurate the PSI reading.
  • PSI, or pounds per square inch, should be between 30-35.
  • Many tire manufacturers have imprinted a suggested PSI right on their tires, and it's best to adhere to their professional recommendation when filling up.
  • Stay properly inflated - refill every month or sooner if necessary.

Driving on underinflated tires is dangerous and impacts gas mileage and overall performance. Being careless with tire pressure is like throwing money right out of the car window, and who wants to do that with the holidays right around the corner? Be safe - inflate!
